1969 Florida : In the winter of 1969, we planned for a warm Florida holiday with the children. Robert was 7 and Henriette (Yet) was 4. We had just purchased a brand new VW and we saw a trailer at Canadian Tire which we could transform into a covered wagon to be used as a dressing room/pavillion at the beach. In our minds everything was possible so we got the trailer, filled it up with our camping gear, attached it to the VW, let the children hop into the car and off we went to the Sunshine State. It was January and we were facing the worst of snowstorms on Highway 401 just about the area of St. Catherine's. It was very slow going and Robert told us that luckily the trailer was pushing us! We made it though. Please let us share our memories with you.

060302 Okanagan Swing in session with special guest Bob Walker on guitar. : At our regular Thursday afternoon rehearsal we had a surprise guest. Bob Walker came to join the band on guitar. I had known Bob Walker from the days in 1974 with Climax Jazz Band at Alberts Hall in the Brunswick Hotel in Toronto when Bob often came to listen when he lived in Thunderbay and came for medical conventions to Toronto. Bassist Leigh had told me that he knew Bob and had actually played with him in their Vernon days a number of yers ago.
Bob played fine rhythm guitar and the afternoon became a memorable event. Also on guitar as well as on bass we had Randy Millan from Vernon.
Our long time regulars were Leigh Perry on bass, Don Ross on tenor sax, George Beazley on piano, Bill Lowden on drums and the odd vocal and I tried to keep up with this talented bunch of musicians on my old cornet.
Bob's wife Jan was there as well and apparently works as an artist as well as photographer and she was so kind to shoot these pictures.

2004 Tango, Ilse's bathroom project : Ilse was always very impressed with the calenders we received from out cousin Pien and later from my brother Hans. The original drawings in these calendars were done by an English artist. Her name is Beryl Cook.
In the fall of 2004 Ilse had an idea. She wanted to dress up our main bathroom wall. Why not combine some of the scenes from these calendars and draw these and paint them on our bathroom wall. From start to finish it took Ilse about two weeks to complete the project
Here is a photo reportage of Ilse's progress

Classical Favourites : This is a some explanatory information I gathered for my friend Leigh Perry. Leigh mentioned that he loved classical piano music.
This is not piano music only. I have included some of my overall classical favourites. I recorded the music described on this photo and text information site on a MP3 CD for Leigh.
Anyone else interested in such a CD should let me know. The work is done now, and it is easy to burn another MP3 CD. I might consider it.

1909-1917 Watercolours by Angeline Bartels-Maurenbrecher : This series of aquarels were made by Ilse's grandmother between 1909 and 1917 in Java, Dutch East Indies.

Ilse's grandfather Maximiliaan Bartels was the manager of a large tea plantation. As a hobby he hunted and collected local birds. These were stuffed and became part of a large bird collection which was donated to the Museum of Natural History in Leiden, Netherlands.

Ilse's grandmother Angeline Bartels-Maurenbrecher made many watercolour drawings of the birds as part of the collection and these were also donated to the Museum.

In 2004 Ilse inquired about this collection and she was able to purchase high quality scanned copies of 26 signed drawings plus a large number of study drawings.

New Year 2005/06 : We were prepared for a big new year's celebration. Never certain if the weather would co-operate, it was therefore a nice surprise to see our guests arrive after smooth rides through the mountains from the Lower Mainland to our place in the Okanagan. First to arrive were cousin Lynne and her family. She and husband Mias had still some business to attend to in Alberta and left their Sue and Josh staying with us for two days first. Riette, Dan, John and Viv arrived on New years Eve. Soon after Lynne and Mias came in and we had a party for two days with the 10 of us.

I was picked to represent the "Goeie Sint" on Decmeber 5 1960 during a 8 am. company party in Amsterdam. I had these pictures somewhere in a hidden album and obviously these were never seen by our kids. After emailing them our daughter Riette had this reply: "See!? - I have horseback riding in my blood! You never cease to amaze me. Great pictures!"
It took a lot of courage and a few stiff "botrreltjes" for me to get on that horse outside in rainy morning rushour.

060513 Wild Cards J.B. in Aberdeen : Randy Keller's Wild Cards Jazz will feature Vintage Jazz Artists and Band Leaders from both coasts at the 'Rain or Shine Jazz Festival' in Aberdeen, Washington on the weekend of 12 - 14 May 2006.

Leader bassist Randy Keller invited me to participate and join his Wild Card Jazz Band.
I had not played a festival for a few years and I was not certain my chops would hold up for the 8 one and a half hour sets during the weekend.
Fortunately it all worked out fine. The band had never played together in this combination, but from the first set on it was swinging nicely with creative solos from the bandmembers. All were relaxed, took it easy, and we all had a darn good time making the music together.
A very satisfying weekend!

Always good to get favourable comments from the crowd. In an email to Randy the following from Joe Kistler:

"" What I wanted to say was I thought the group you put together for
this occasion ranked far and away up there as one of the best Wild Card
groups to this date! The jazz fans all over town were saying, ".....have
you heard the Wild Cards?"......."Have you heard the Wild Cards?".......
"This is one of the best Wild Card groups I've ever heard!"...........!"
Etc., etc. I strongly agree.
I hope all the members of your group enjoyed themselves in the
little humble town of Aberdeen. We're certainly no Sacramento or San
Diego or Sun Valley, but we do know our "Trad Jazz" and your group
provided us with some of the best this past weekend.
Thanks to you and your band members.""

Thank you Joe!
